Fines and Fees
The campus community depends on the Library and its services to support research and teaching across all disciplines. In return, the Library relies on its users to help ensure fair and timely access to its materials. When items are not returned on time, it limits access for others. By returning or renewing materials by their due dates, users support equitable access for all. Adhering to Library circulation policies helps everyone benefit from our shared resources.
Contact LibraryBilling@ucsd.edu for more information on Library billing and policies.
Overdue Materials
You can find the due date of materials you’ve checked out by viewing your library account. If you intend to leave the area for an extended period of time, contact LibraryBorrowing@ucsd.edu for an extension or return all library materials before they become overdue.
Overdue materials may incur a replacement fee of $100.
For items loaned on an hourly basis (such as 3-hour or 24-hour loans), overdue fines start accumulating as soon as the item is past due. Items that are significantly overdue will be considered lost and billed for replacement.
Lost or Stolen Materials
Immediately report lost or stolen materials to the Library to address potential late fees and replacement charges.
Damaged Books
You are responsible for any damage that occurs to an item while it is checked out to you. Please alert us to any damage prior to checking out a book. Materials must be returned in the same condition they were in when borrowed. Damaging library materials in any way could result in repair or replacement fees.
Return Claims
If you receive an overdue notice for an item that has been returned, or you believe has been returned, contact LibraryBilling@ucsd.edu.

Paying for Items Owned by Another UC
Fines for UC interlibrary loan (ILL) items are determined by the campus that owns the item. Each UC campus has its own policies regarding fines, fees, and payments. UC San Diego Library users must contact the campus that owns the billed item to obtain payment instructions. Unpaid fees from other UC campuses may lead to borrowing restrictions until the issue is resolved.
