Cultural Diversity Committee (A. Prussing)

A. Prussing attended the third ARL Conference on Diversity in Academic Libraries on April 4-6, 2002 in Iowa City. Library Human Resources funded the trip. It was a wonderful conference; six to seven people from the other UC campuses attended; and there were one hundred fifty people in attendance. There were excellent keynote speakers and A. Prussing will let us know when the speeches are available on the web. The main themes of the conference were the connection between diversity and excellence; the need for more diverse librarians, and on campus in general, to have a competitive edge with the changing demographics; and diversity in all of its different aspects. A. Prussing also attended a program on academic internships and she will speak about it with the Cultural Diversity Committee. A. Prussing will give a presentation about the conference at the next LAUC-SD membership meeting. This conference is held every other year. The other UC campuses have non-librarians on their diversity committees including a LAUC member. E. Valdez asked if UCOP is still holding the University of California Diversity Fairs. A few years ago he attended one held here at UCSD. A. Prussing will check into this.

Research and Professional Development Committee (M. L. Bergstrom sent via email)

• R&PD had good attendance at the lecture by Dr. Christine Borgman. R&PD purchased a copy of her book entitled "From Gutenberg to the Global Information Infrastructure: Access to Information in the Networked World." Following her talk Dr. Borgman signed the book, and R&PD donated it to the library.
• The first OCLC teleconference was broadcast and we have the videotapes for circulation to those who couldn't attend. There are two more teleconferences to come in this series.
• We've had some discussion of the perennial question of policies guiding the use of professional development funds and will report more fully to the Executive Board on this at a meeting when we can be present.
• We welcome suggestions for speakers or events that would be of interest.

Nominations/Elections

H. Colson reported that the call for nominations was sent and he has received responses. The committee will meet next week to review the ground rules. He reminded the Executive Board to send him recommendations.

LAUC Assembly

J. Reiswig reported that the LAUC Assembly would return to UCSD next spring. E. Cowell and E. Valdez are unable to attend the 2002 Spring Assembly at UCLA. H. Colson and A. Perez will attend in their stead.

May membership meeting

The May 21st membership meeting collides with MLA, therefore it was suggested that we change the meeting to May 14th. J. Reiswig will ask the membership which of the two dates would work out better for the majority of members. A. Perez will check the availability of the Seuss Room on May 14th.

Privacy Task Force Report

J. Reiswig encouraged the Executive Board to attend the Privacy Task Force Report meeting on Friday, April 12th at 9am in room 276. This report will be discussed in LMG as well.

LAUC President's meeting with University Librarians

D. Murphy has been trying to get on the University Librarians meeting agenda at least once per year.
