Library Services Available During the Campus Winter Closure 2022

Building Hours

Geisel Library will close on Thursday, December 22 at 6 p.m. and reopen on Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at 7:30 a.m.

WongAvery Library will close on Thursday, December 22 at 5:30 p.m. and reopen on Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at 10:00 a.m.

Online Resources

Access to online Library resources should be unaffected during the winter closure. UC San Diego students, faculty, and staff may access Library-licensed resources by accessing the campus VPN using the 2-step-secured allthruucsd setting.

Subject and Research Guides are available to help you navigate our online resources.


Requests

Borrowing requests submitted during the closure will be processed in the order received beginning January 3, 2023.

To obtain items prior to the closure, place requests for UC San Diego-owned items by Monday, December 19, 2022 for pickup of items at WongAvery Library, Geisel Library, or Campus Curbside pickup at the Gilman Parking Structure by December 22, 2022. All facilities will be closed as of December 23.


Interlibrary Loan Requests

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) requests submitted during the closure will be processed in the order received beginning January 3, 2023.


Course Reserves

Instructors may continue to submit requests during the closure by logging into the Course Reserves system. Requests submitted after Friday, December 9, 2022 will be processed in the order received beginning January 3, 2023 and may not be available for student use until after winter quarter instruction has begun.

Winter quarter electronic reserves materials that have been processed will become available to students via the Course Reserves system beginning Tuesday, January 3, 2023.


Returning Items, including ILL

UC San Diego-owned items are not due for return during the closure. Check your library account in advance for due dates, and renew or return items, as appropriate.

Items may be returned at any time to any of the Library’s book return bins.


Renewing ILL Items

No items are due for return during the closure. To request renewal of an ILL item:

  • Go to your My Library Card account.
  • Choose UC San Diego Single-Sign-On (SSO) and login with your credentials.
  • Items checked out will appear under LOANS and within each of the locations under the ‘All Institutions’ section.
  • Click on the Renew link associated with the item.

If the Renew option doesn’t appear, this means the item is not available for renewal at that time. Contact ill@ucsd.edu about other available options.

Note: Renewal requests received during the closure will be processed beginning Tuesday, January 3, 2023.

  • Please note: After December 22, 2022, limited information and research assistance is available through the Library's 24/7 online chat service, with questions answered by librarians from non-UC academic libraries. Questions referred to UC San Diego librarians for further response, along with questions submitted by email or phone, will start receiving replies on January 3, 2023 in the order received.
