Recent evidence suggests that, compared with hearing people, deaf people have enhanced visual attention to simple stimuli viewed in the parafovea and periphery. Although a large part of reading involves processing the fixated words in foveal vision, readers also utilize information in parafoveal vision to preprocess upcoming words and decide where to look next. In the study reported here, we investigated whether auditory deprivation affects low-level visual processing during reading by comparing the perceptual span of deaf signers who were skilled and less-skilled readers with the perceptual span of skilled hearing readers. Compared with hearing readers, the two groups of deaf readers had a larger perceptual span than would be expected given their reading ability. These results provide the first evidence that deaf readers’ enhanced attentional allocation to the parafovea is used during complex cognitive tasks, such as reading.

This package contains data and data processing information for a gaze-contingent moving window experiment. The raw data are available in ASC (text) format in the "ASC" sub-directory of the Data component. The input parameter files and scripts used to process the data are available in the "Processing" sub-directory. Note that the original script file contained items from two experiments, but the DA1 files (Timdrop analyses) provided in this package only contain data from conditions 1-5 (Span experiment; data from the second experiment, condition 6, are unpublished). Processed data files (one row for each item X subject combination) from Dampdry are available in the "Dampdry Output (global eye movement measures)" sub-directory (".out"). Trials with two or more blinks (see "Blink Removal" folder for output) were removed from the analyses. See the Guide (Related Resource link, below) for details on some of the different types of files and column definitions that are contained in the data collection.
Subject characteristics: Skilled Hearing Readers (SKH) All DA1 files beginning with the letter "H" = hearing adults, native speakers of English, age 21-43 years (M = 29), mean reading level = 11th grade
Skilled Deaf Readers (SKD) Main communication mode is American Sign Language, learned before 10 years old, age 20-45 years (M = 30), mean reading level = 10th grade
