Your Guide to the Library: Academic Year 2024-25

Welcome to Academic Year 2024-25, Tritons! Whether you’re a new or returning student, a faculty member or a researcher, this is your library to explore and utilize. Read on to learn how the Library is here to support your academic success, personal curiosity and overall well-being.

UC San Diego Library has two library buildings to support you – Geisel Library and Sally T. WongAvery Library – located at opposite ends of Library Walk. Both buildings have their own set schedules, but our online resources never sleep! Our website has guides to help you get started with your research, information on holiday closures, and so much more. You can also access our online resources 24/7 from off-campus.

Access a Welcome Week Tour.
Geisel Library is a campus landmark named in honor of Audrey and Theodor Seuss Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss). During Welcome Week, you can get acquainted with the wide variety of study spaces, collections, equipment, and amenities we offer. A virtual tour is available on our website. Keep an eye on our social channels for exact dates and times of other self-guided activities.

Got questions? Ask a Librarian!
Librarians are here to help by chat, email, text, phone, walk-in or appointment! Check out all your options for research assistance.

Need technology? We have it.
Borrow tech gadgets! Our Tech Lending Program allows you to check out essential items like chargers, video adapters, headphones, bookstands, lamps and more. Select items are available from the Service Hubs in each Library building, as well as from Geisel’s BorrowBot. Check UC Library Search in advance for item availability and location.

PCs, Macs and Wēpa self-service printing are available at Geisel and WongAvery. A list of computing options is available online. Self-service scanners, also available in each building, provide quick, high-quality scans of print materials.

Explore Geisel’s Labs.
The Digital Media Lab is an exciting high-tech space where you can use image, video, sound, 3D creation and editing software.

The Data & GIS Lab provides software and computational tools to find, use, work with, organize and manage geospatial, numeric and textual data in various formats. The Lab also serves as a campus base for GIS services and access to GIS data and software.

Find your own study space.
Finding a space on campus to collaborate with classmates can be tough. The Library has dozens of rooms in Geisel and WongAvery where you can work on group projects or study together. Reserve one now!

WongAvery Library is home to a 24-hour lounge for graduate and professional students in all disciplines (advance registration required). The Graduate Study Lounge offers tables, comfortable seating, computers, and a printer. Geisel Library offers 48 lockers for graduate students (reservation is required). Request one here.

New furnishings were installed in Geisel Library West, 1st Floor, over the summer! These study nooks (pictured above) offer bright and cozy spaces equipped with a variety of chargers and outlets, mounted whiteboards, sound-dampening walls, and motion-sensor lights. Two booths have longer tables for easy wheelchair access.

Spaces to take a break in Geisel.

The Calm Cave Meditation Space (Room 621) offers a brief retreat from studying. Students can relax, breathe deeply, clear their minds and peruse a variety of mindfulness and wellness books.

Drop in to play board or card games, color, do origami, or de-stress with printable puzzles. The Leisure Lounge Art/Game Room (Geisel 1st Floor West) features colorful furniture that can be reconfigured to suit the game or creative activity you are doing!

De-Stress with the Library!

From Library student activities like De-Stress with Pups and Yoga at the Library to the monthly Library De-Stress Publication filled with coloring pages and puzzles, you can always find a way to take a break from studies and center yourself when needed.

Looking for textbooks?
The Library may have textbooks on Course Reserves that you can check out! Physical course reserves are library-use only in the Geisel Service Hub, while e-reserves are offered whenever possible. Some e-books, articles and streaming films are also available online. This could save you significant money!
