Geisel Library Receives Prestigious Award for Architectural Design

Our beloved Geisel Library took home the American Institute of Architects, San Diego Chapter (AIASD) Legacy Award! This prestigious award recognizes iconic architectural works in San Diego that were built at least 25 years ago and celebrates the architects responsible for each building’s majesty… in our case William Pereira and Associates. Pereira and team were brought on as the lead architectural firm for the Central University Library project back in the mid-60s. Click here to watch a video of the Audrey Geisel University Librarian Erik Mitchell’s acceptance speech.

Past winners of the AIASD Legacy Award include the Coronado Bridge, The Salk Institute for Biological Studies and The La Jolla Women’s Club. Winning this award solidifies Geisel’s place in the upper echelon of architectural wonders in our region—right where it belongs!

Please join us in celebrating this momentous achievement, and during our jubilee year no less. More information about the 50th anniversary celebration for Geisel Library, including an architecture talk on November 18, can be found at geisel50.ucsd.edu.

Have you taken a photo of the building? If so, we’d love to see it on social media. Share your photos with us using #Geisel50.
