Celebrating 150 Years of the Periodic Table Exhibition

One hundred and fifty years ago, Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev first came up with his periodic system of the chemical elements – what we now think of as the periodic table. In honor of this unique tool, the United Nations proclaimed 2019 to be the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements. The UC San Diego Library is joining the worldwide celebrations of this significant achievement with an exhibition at the Biomedical Library Breezeway from August 10-December 14.

Throughout the year, we’ll also highlight interesting articles on the history and evolution of this chemical icon (and some of the lesser-known names involved), the hunt for new elements and discovery of the most recent ones, books in the collection, alternative representations of the periodic table, fictitious elements, and even the Periodic Table’s place as a popular culture meme. Join in the conversation on social media by following the  #IYPT2019 hashtag on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
