- Description
-
San Basilio, located north of Loreto BCS, is a small bay that is home to a diverse marine ecosystem that sustains a small community of fishers. A research team from the Centro para la Biodiversidad Marina y la Conservación AC conducted interviews with members of the fishing community to identify relevant socioeconomic aspects. This collaborative effort aims to create a knowledge baseline of the biological diversity in the area, which in turn will help the local community, researchers and government begin discussions on the best conservation and management options. This project also seeks to build local capacities that allow fishers to be directly involved in fisheries and ecological monitoring efforts to assess the health of San Basilio Bay.

The research team designed a questionnaire to generate data related to fishing activities, governance and organization structure, operating costs and commercialization options for their catch. The questionnaire included the following sections: (a) general information (age, birthplace, training, years in fishing); (b) fleet operation (fishing sites, best fishing seasons, fishing equipment and infrastructure); (c) socioeconomic indicators (family, schooling, work experience, income); and (d) income distribution and market networks.
