What remains of the core oceanographic instrument barrel shown here with lead damaged, from salt water corrosion and after being dragged along the six mile deep Tonga Trench for many hours on New Year's Day during the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Capricorn Expedition (1952-1953). The Tonga Trench located in the Pacific Ocean it is 10,882 meters (35,702 ft) deep at its deepest point and is the second deepest place in the ocean. January 1, 1953.
