- Description
-
We present an accessible, spatial method of calculating the extent of natural resource extraction based on two simple measures that are available, or at least easily estimable, in even the most data poor scenarios: the number of production units (apparatus used in the resource extraction) and the local human population. We illustrate the method using a fisheries case study from the Gulf of California, Mexico. In terms of marine fisheries, methods to estimate extent that currently exist are built around electronic tracking and logbook systems and generally focus on industrial fisheries. The spatial extent for small-scale fisheries therefore often remains elusive. This simple method can easily be used across a range of different systems where the extent of natural resource extraction needs to be estimated.
