Jacqueline Reyes Mamani es una persona de la comunidad de Coyo en el Salar de Atacama, Chile. Su familia es una de las más antiguas de este ayllu. En la entrevista Jacqueline cuenta la historia de sus abuelos que se dedicaban al cultivo de sal y de los frutos del chañar y del algarrobo, dos de los árboles más importantes de la zona. Los abuelos de Jacqueline participaban también en las caravanas altoandinas y en el trueque de los frutos del chañar y del algarrobo por otros alimentos que venían de las comunidades indígenas de Bolivia y Argentina. Asimismo, en la entrevista Jacqueline explica los valores que le transmitieron sus abuelos y en particular las ceremonias del pago a la tierra y de la minga, una forma de trabajo colectivo y de reciprocidad que se practica en su comunidad.

En la segunda parte de la entrevista Jacqueline aborda su relación con el Padre Le Paige. El Padre Gustavo Le Paige era un jesuita belga que se instaló en San Pedro de Atacama en los años 50. Jacqueline explica que el Padre Le Paige fue su profesor de catequesis y que existía un respeto reverencial por él en la zona. Asimismo, en la entrevista Jacqueline acusa a Le Paige de profanar tumbas y expoliar los restos arqueológicos de la aldea de Tulor y exige la devolución de los múltiples objetos que Le Paige exhumó para llevarlos a museos de Europa sin el consentimiento de la comunidad Lickan Antay de Coyo. Cuenta también que su participación involuntaria en las excavaciones arqueológicas promovidas por Le Paige cuando era una niña es hoy una herida abierta.

En la última parte de la entrevista, Jacqueline explica la importancia que tienen el chañar y el algarrobo en su comunidad y valora los impactos negativos que tiene y tendrá la industria del litio en su comunidad.

Jacqueline Reyes Mamani is from the Coyo community in the Salar de Atacama, in Chile. Her family is one of the oldest ones in the ayllu. In the interview, Jacqueline tells the story of her grandparents who harvested salt, chañar fruit, and algarrobo (carob), two of the region’s most important trees (chañar and algarrobo). Her grandparents also participated in the Andean caravans and in trueque, exchanging chañar and algarrobo for other foods with indigenous communities from Bolivia and Argentina. Jacqueline explains the values passed down by her grandparents, particularly the importance of payments to the earth and of the minga, a form of collective and reciprocal work practiced in their community.

In the second part of the interview, Jacqueline explains her relationship with Father Le Paige. Father Gustavo Le Paige was a Belgian Jesuit settled in San Pedro de Atacama in the 1950s. Jacqueline explains that Le Paige was her Sunday school teacher and that he was held in reverence in the region. At the same time, Jacqueline accuses him of spoiling and plundering tombs and archaeological remains in Tulor. She demands that those stolen objects, that were taken without the Lickan Antay people’s consent, must be immediately returned from the museums in Europe. Jacqueline still sufers from the memories of involuntarily participating in Le Paige’s archaeological excavations.

In the final part of the interview, Jacqueline explains the importance of chañar and algarrobo for her community, and she assesses the negative impacts that the lithium industry has and will have there.
