A school girl standing in a classroom in the tunnel system of Xigangchun Red Guard Elementary School, Dalian. Summer, 1973. “Located in a hilly neighborhood well away from the harbor, the school was staffed by teachers who worked with their students to dig their own remarkable tunnel system into the hillside next to the playground. At the entrance was a large slogan: MAINTAIN OUR VIGILANCE, PROTECT THE MOTHERLAND. Stumbling along the packed mud floors while mounted loudspeakers played scratchy music, I entered a room where a seventh-grader with long pigtails stood up and provided a ‘brief introduction’ in a tone that made her sound more like a drill sergeant than a schoolgirl. ‘Digging this tunnel was a heroic experience, in which we were guided by the teachings of Chairman Mao,' she declared. ‘All the teachers and pupils of the school can fit inside. We can do homework and even cook in here.' From the tunnel, we were taken to visit several classrooms.”--Chinoy, M. (1999). In China live: People power and the television revolution (pp. 47).
