Figure 381 from Chapter 15 (Cytoplasmic Inclusions) of 'The Cell, 2nd Ed.' by Don W. Fawcett M.D. Type-d cell from acinus type III of the salivary gland of the tick Rhipicephalus appendiculatus. The compound granules shown here demonstrate variability in the structure of secretory granules. The smaller dark granules forming from the Golgi (see arrows) also suggest a different mechanism of genesis where multiple small membrane-bounded particles coalesce into a compound vesicle. The smaller granules are no longer individually wrapped, but the entire aggregation is surrounded with a single membrane.
