The compound granules shown here demonstrate variability in the structure of secretory granules. The smaller dark granules forming from the Golgi (see arrows) also suggest a different mechanism of genesis where multiple small membrane-bounded particles coalesce into a compound vesicle. The smaller granules are no longer individually wrapped, but the entire aggregation is surrounded with a single membrane.
