Description | This collection consists of NetCDF files that contain all data necessary to reproduce the results from Villas Bôas et al. (2022). The data are primarily composed of sea surface height (SSH) and wave directional spectra measured from the Modular Aerial Sensing System (MASS) lidar. Publicly available ancillary data with environmental conditions such as winds, wave buoy measurements, and satellite altimetry SSH used in the paper are also provided for completeness. |

- Description
-
Airborne lidar altimetry can measure the sea surface height (SSH) over scales ranging from hundreds of kilometers to a few meters. This collection has SSH observations taken during an airborne lidar campaign conducted in the spring of 2019 off the California coast in support of the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission. The collection consists of NetCDF files with all data necessary to reproduce the figures in Villas Bôas et al. (2022), which were based on flights from March 28, 2019, and April 9, 2019. The data can be used in conjunction with code available in the following GitHub repository: https://github.com/biavillasboas/BroadbandSpectrum
- Scope And Content
-
The contents of the directory contained in the .tgz file are described below.
1- AVISO/
Gridded AVISO sea level anomaly in the California Current region for March 28, 2019 (aviso_20190328.nc) and April 9, 2019 (aviso_20190409.nc)
2- CDIP/
Wave buoy data from The Coastal Data Information Program (CDIP). File names follow the convention CDIP(buoy ID)_YYYYMMDD.nc
3- ERA5/
Gridded ERA 5 10 m wind velocities in the California Current region for March 28, 2019 (ERA5_20190328.nc) and April 9, 2019 (ERA5_20190409.nc)
4- MASS/
Airborne measurements from Scripps' Modular Aerial Sensing System (MASS) for two flight dates: March 28, 2019 (20190328) and April 9, 2019 (20190409)
binned_point_cloud/
Along-track averaged sea surface height measurements from MASS computed after binning the lidar point clound into 1 m bins. The data is separated by crosswind (crosswind/) and upwind-downwind (upwind/) tracks.
dirspec/
Two-dimensional surface wave spectrum computed from MASS based on sea surface height data grided on 0.5 m horizontal bins. Wave bulk parameters such as significant wave height, direction, and wavelength are also included in the files.
