Description

The UC San Diego Center for Research in Computing and the Arts (CRCA) collection consists of digital files documenting the activities of the experimental music and art research unit. The Project for Music Experiment, funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, opened in 1972 under the direction of UC San Diego professor Roger Reynolds. In 1973, the project became an organized research unit at the University of California, San Diego and renamed the Center for Music Experiment (CME). In 1991, the UC Regents approved the change of name from CME to CRCA - the Center for Research in Computing and the Arts (CRCA). On July 1, 2012, CRCA was "sunset" and its functions and facilities were folded into Calit2.

CRCA was designed as a performance, composition, and technological research space for innovations with digital computer music. The center facilitated and sponsored countless events, as well as worked with artists from around the world through exchange programs. This collection contains produced works, event recordings and photographs, and writings produced by the CRCA and its affiliates.

The records were transferred to the UC San Diego Library in various digital formats, often complimenting paper materials and other media types represented in the finding aid. Many of the files were in obsolete or unsupported formats when the collection was processed. Some photographs, graphic images, and text documents were converted to PDF to allow access. Additionally, several audio files were converted from their original file formats for access, and may not render as originally created. When files were converted or transformed, the original files in their native formats were also preserved. Other files, such as computer programs or websites that require obsolete operating systems or software for access, may be requested by contacting Special Collections & Archives.
