As of January 3, 2022, the UC San Diego Library buildings – Geisel Library and WongAvery Library – are fully open to UC San Diego students, faculty, staff, and the public. Per campus policy, masks are now optional in the Library buildings. 

Visit the Library Hours page to view operating hours for both buildings, as well as Special Collections & Archives. For general assistance, please call (858) 534-0134 during open hours or visit our help center.

Due to current staffing, there may be delays in processing requests.

Please note the following:

  • All study seats, computer stations, and amenities like charging lockers and whiteboards in both buildings are available without reservations. Specialized computing such as the Data & GIS Lab’s DataCruncher require reservations.
  • Print collections are fully accessible and can be browsed and checked out in person, or requested for pickup at the Gilman Parking Structure or in either Library building.
  • The Front Desk has been temporarily relocated to the Seuss Room during construction (January - August 2022); services in this area include:
    • General assistance
    • Checkout and return of library materials, including Tech Lending inventory
    • Self-service course reserves (in-room use only)
    • Pickup of library materials on hold and general supplies, as well as Grab and Go Chromebooks, are available in the adjacent Seuss Room Lobby
  • Research assistance is offered via email (, phone (858-822-0450) and in person during select hours from the Research Assistance Desk in the West Commons, past the entrance to Special Collections & Archives.
  • Library instruction is available online and in-person by request. Contact Assistant Program Director for Instruction Services Lisa Martin ( with questions. For personal assistance with Library instruction and materials for courses, contact your subject librarian.
  • Library spaces are open without distancing restrictions. Appointments and reservations for the following can be made at
    • Group study rooms are available by reservation.
    • Special Collections & Archives is open Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Appointments are not necessary.
    • The Data & GIS Lab is open for self-service computer use. Some software is also available via virtual machines. Virtual consultations are available by appointment.
    • Check the The Digital Media Lab (DML) website for current hours.
  • Special software monitors and displays building density in real-time. Prior to arrival, patrons may check space availability via the Waitz app.
  • Self-service cleaning supplies continue to be available to our users throughout the Library buildings.
