Following the abdication of Alfonso XIII in 1931, the proclamation of a republic and democratic elections followed in short order. The elections of 1931 favored the parties of the left and center leading to the creation of a republican-socialist coalition under the premiership of Manuel Azaña of Acción Republicana. In Catalonia, the victory of the newly formed Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya led to the declaration of a Catalonian republic and negotiations toward a regional statute of autonomy.
