A small selection of papers from Scripps Institution of Oceanography geologist Edward Litton "Jerry" Winterer, known for his study of sediments and his involvement with the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) and its successor, the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP).

Extent: 4 Linear feet (10 archives boxes)
Edward Litton "Jerry" Winterer was born February 14, 1925 in Oakland, California. His father Edward V. Winterer was chief geologist and vice-president of the Superior Oil Company. Winterer attended UCLA, earning his A.B., M.A., and in 1954, his PhD in geology, and later joined UCLA's faculty. During this time, he was also employed as a geologist for the U.S. Geological Survey from 1949-1953. Winterer joined UC San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1963 and became a key figure in the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) and its successor, the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP). Winterer specifically studied pelagic sedimentation in the Pacific, the origin and palaeoceanographic significance of Mesozoic radiolarites, the geomorphology of atoll lagoons, as well as complex tectonic plate processes in the Pacific. In 1968, Winterer was appointed the Scripps Institution's second chairman by then Chancellor William J. McGill and Scripps Director William A. Nierenberg. He also served as chairman of the graduate department from 1968 to 1972, and was named distinguished research professor in 1994. He retired from teaching in 1997 and died in 2016 at the age of 91.
An obituary of Winterer is posted online as part of the University Communications & Public Relations Materials (RSS 6020) collection of news releases: https://library.ucsd.edu/dc/object/bb0588865x
A small selection of papers from Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) geologist Edward Litton "Jerry" Winterer, known for his studies of sedimentary geology. The materials appear to be remnants of Winterer's files that may have been left behind in a shared office or laboratory environment, and they are neither extensive or representative of Winterer's full scope of work. The collection does not contain significant correspondence, or documentation of his UC San Diego administrative or teaching work at UC San Diego, SIO or within the Deep Sea Drilling Project.
Materials are arranged chronologically within in two series: 1) PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES & RESEARCH PAPERS, and 2) STUDIES & TEACHING.
Provenance
This body of Winterer material was donated as part of a larger accession of papers from the office of Douglas L. Inman in 2002. It is possible they shared or overlapped an office space; or, that Winterer material had been passed on to Inman after his retirement in 1997. Inman retired as a research professor at SIO in 2003.
This collection is minimally processed. The folders have not been numbered.
