OFF-SITE STORAGE: COLLECTION STORED OFF-SITE: ALLOW TWO TO THREE (2-3) WEEKS FOR RETRIEVAL OF MATERIALS.

Extent: 8.3 Linear feet (17 shoe boxes, 2 oversized flat boxes)

Master photographic negatives organized by marine geologist and Scripps Institution of Oceanography professor Douglas L. Inman, a founder of the field of coastal oceanography.

Master photographic negatives organized by marine geologist Douglas L. Inman. These images were stored and used by researchers and faculty as a photograph archive at SIO's Center for Coastal Studies.

Arranged in original indexed order, images are numbered sequentially from 1 through 1441 beginning in 1948, and continuing through 1970. In 1971 negatives are numbered sequentially by the year they were produced and include negative numbers 71.1 through 84.67. The negatives are housed in 17 archival shoe boxes, and the collection includes 20 packets of handwritten original indexes called "image ledgers" housed in large flat boxes. The indexes follow the master negative numbering system from 1948 through the 1990s and end with 97.27. After 1984, master negatives were not added to these files, but were stored separately by Inman. Post-1984 images may be found within the Douglas L. Inman Papers (SMC 57). Some negatives bear the name Jean K. on the envelope and in the index notes; these refers to Jean Keefner, secretary to Douglas Inman.

The majority of the negatives are black and white, and are either 4x5 inch sheet negatives or 35mm film negatives. There are some gaps and interruptions in Inman's numbering system. Contact prints produced from these master negatives, following Inman's same numerical system are located in SMC 57, Douglas L. Inman Papers, Boxes 252-255. SMC 57 also includes additional negatives produced from the mid-eighties on, in boxes 139 and 255.

Photographic negatives organized by marine geologist and Scripps Institution of Oceanography professor Douglas L. Inman, a founder of the field of coastal oceanography. The subjects of the images include beaches and coastal areas, oceanographic instruments, coastal processes, lagoons, canyons, supporting images for lectures, and geographic regions of California, Baja California and Hawaii.

Arranged in Inman's original indexed order, images are numbered sequentially from 1 through 1441, beginning in 1948, and ending in 1970. In 1971, a new numbering scheme was established, and the negatives are numbered sequentially by the year they were produced and include negative numbers 71.1 through 84.67. The negatives are housed in 17 archival shoe boxes, and the collection also includes original handwritten indexes called "image ledgers" housed in large flat boxes. The indexes record photo subjects following the master negative numbering system from 1948 through the 1990s, ending with 97.27. The text in the ledgers was captured in a Word document around 2012, and is linked here for user reference.

After 1984, master negatives were not added to these files, but were stored separately by Inman. Post-1984 images may be found within the Douglas L. Inman Papers (SMC 57), in box 139 and 255.

It is recommended that contact prints are consulted prior to paging the negatives.
