Papers of author, editor, engineer, and diving officer Edward Cargile. Papers reflect Cargile's life and work as a diver, underwater photographer, author, editor of dive journals, and consultant in the dive industry, as well as illustrate the history of diving and the diving industry. The collection ranges in date from 1946-2006, with the bulk of the collection dating from 1969-2001.

Edward C. Cargile was born in San Diego, California in 1939. He began diving and experimenting with underwater photography in his early teens. While in high school, Cargile joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves. While attending San Diego City College, he transferred to the Marine Corps Active Reserves.

Cargile completed his B.S. in Phsyics from North American University in 1963. After graduation he worked as an Engineering Supervisor at Rockwell International, overseeing the Apollo Test Data Processing Unit. Cargile continued diving, training other divers, including U.S. Navy personnel in the recovery of the Apollo Spacecraft.

Over the years Cargile worked for a number of companies and institutions. He became the Director of the Underwater Technology Institute (UTI) in 1970, editor of Aquarius Magazine for the National Association of Scuba Diving Schools in 1971, and Program Manager of the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI) Diving Association. In 1974, Cargile was hired by the Commercial Diving Center of Oceaneering International to write training procedures for diving bell and saturation diving operations. He went on to work for Scubapro and then as the Director of Communications for the Diving Equipment and Marketing Association (DEMA).

Throughout his life Cargile wrote about diving and the history of divers and taught both diving and underwater photography courses.

SERIES 2) CORRESPONDENCE: Professional letters regarding potential business ventures. The bulk of the series relates to Cargile's writing and attempts to publish. His exchanges with Meredith Wills deal entirely with the attempt to publish Cargile's book titled, "Aquanauts Dive the Andrea Doria."

Scope and Content of Series

SERIES 3) WRITINGS: Typescripts, manuscripts, and notes for various articles, essays, and book projects. Cargile also developed proposals for a television channel and film series, which are located in this series. In many cases letters to editors, notes regarding attempts to publish, and photographs submitted for use as article illustrations are filed with corresponding articles.
