The papers of marine geologist and Scripps Institution of Oceanography professor Douglas L. Inman, a founder in the field of coastal oceanography. The collection includes correspondence, writings, field notes and research notebooks, meetings and lecture notes, accounts of professional endeavors, and regional observation data. It also includes extensive aerial regional images of the California and Baja California, Mexico coastlines.

Series 4) RESEARCH NOTES. Inman's written research materials and files, arranged in his preferred system into 11 subseries by theme and content. This series includes original data, graphs, and other related materials spanning the bulk of Inman's professional career. The first subseries, 4A) Numbered Research Notes, is organized in Inman's original order by his subject numbering system. A link to an index of Inman's numbering scheme, which describes the subjects and folder titles assigned to each code number, is the top item in that subseries. (This same subject numbering scheme was also used by Inman for subject photographs). Regional Observations are coded and arranged by geographical location using Inman's abbreviations of regional prefixes. PHOTOGRAPHIC MATERIAL

Scope and Content of Series

Series 6) PHOTOGRAPHIC MATERIALS. Inman's collection of photographic prints, slides and some contact sheets, arranged into four subseries. The series includes extensive aerial photographs supporting Inman's coastline research, as well as subject and regional photographic prints and slides. An additional selection of numbered teaching slides is also included in this series, located in FB-79 – FB-81.

A) Aerial Photographs: Aerial view images, primarily of coastlines and the ocean off California. The Aerial Photographs subseries also includes oversized aerial prints, some of which were taken during United States Navy's sorties along the California coast, dated circa 1955. Some of these are stamped "confidential" on the verso, however, these photographs are all open for research. A link to Inman's California regional index is near the top of the list.

B) Contact Prints and Negatives - Master Archive: This material, in boxes 252-255, and box 139, complements images from Inman's "master" negative collection, which is stored separately as SMC 141. It contains small contact prints of many negatives from that collection, filed in corresponding indexed numbered order. It also includes negatives that continue where SMC 141 ends, from the mid-1980s on. It is strongly recommended that researchers look at the contact sheets before requesting negatives and/or scans from SMC 141, to determine the quality of the image.

C) Subject Photographs and Slides: This run of photographic material was organized numerically by subject by Inman, following a unique numbering scheme. Inman used an identical, corresponding scheme to organize his subject files (see Series 4A. Numbered Research Notes, which has a subject index guide at the top of the subseries list). See keywords in description for assistance identifying the content. This subseries includes many figures, charts, and graphs.

D) Regional Photographs and Slides: Regional material is arranged by Inman's codes for regional prefixes. "C" materials reference California; a scanned guide to Inman's indexing scheme for California is linking in the finding aid, and linked here.
