The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) Special Events Office, grew out of the SIO Communications Office in 1993. Reporting to the Deputy Director, the office was charged with planning events and coordinating the Visitors Program. Special Events also took over operation of the Scripps Speakers Bureau, arranging talks and lectures by prominent scholars. In addition, they oversaw various SIO awards and fellowships, including selection committees.
Director: Jill (Ives) Hammons (1993-2008). The office was closed on March 31, 2008.

The records contain the files of the Director Jill (Ives) Hammons, and her two assistants Karen Garst and Paul David Terry. Materials include correspondence, programs and itineraries, committee materials, publicity, video and sound recordings, and photographs. The bulk date since the office's founding in 1993, through its closure in 2008; although some material predates it.
