Digital Content

Selected materials from the collection have been digitized.

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) Lantern Slide Collection contains 165 slides documenting the history of SIO, including the development of the campus, research, and portraits of scientists.

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) Lantern Slide Collection was created and maintained by the SIO Library, during Ruth Ragan's tenure as librarian. In October of 1973, Betty Shor and Paul Leverenz retrieved the slides from the attic of the old library building. Two accessions of materials were brought to the SIO archives in 1981 and 1986. The SIO Archives was later transferred to stewardship of the UC San Diego Library's Special Collections & Archives Program.

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) Lantern Slide Collection contains 165 slides documenting the history of SIO, including the development of the campus, research, and portraits of scientists. Of particular interest are images of local erosion; as well as early images of SIO buildings and ships. The majority of the slides have labels, while dates are only recorded on a few slides. The slides were collected between 1920 and 1940, although several images predate this period.

Materials are arranged alphabetically, using topic groupings created by the SIO Library.
