The Scripps Institution of Oceanography Marine Physical Laboratory records document the activities of the research unit; including correspondence, administrative files, research and design materials, contracts and grants, publications and reports, images, and audiovisual recordings.

The Marine Physical Laboratory (MPL) was established in 1946, as one of the first research units at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. During WWII, the University of California Division of War Research (UCDWR) was established as a Navy-oriented research laboratory. One of the early research focuses of the unit was developing defenses against submarine attacks. Closely related to Scripps Institution of Oceanography and housed in San Diego, the UCDWR made advancements in various fields including underwater noise, underwater acoustics, and sonar. After the war, the UCDWR transitioned into the Marine Physical Laboratory (MPL). Originally established as a UC systemwide organized research unit, MPL officially opened on June 1, 1946. In April 1948, MPL was integrated into Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

The Marine Physical Laboratory (MPL) is a multidisciplinary unit and explores a wide variety of research focused on a greater understanding of our oceans as a whole. Over the years research topics have included: acoustics, signal-processing, sound and sonar, seafloor mapping and surveys, currents and wave research, plate tectonics and seismic studies, geomagnetism, ocean heat flow, and other topics of physical oceanography.

MPL has worked to develop new and specialized instruments, equipment, and research platforms to facilitate research. This includes the development and design of: R/P FLIP, Deep Tow vehicle, Oceanographic Research Buoy (ORB), Remote Underwater Manipulator (RUM), doppler sonar, and Albacore DIMUS (Digital Multibeam Steering). Since its founding in 1946, the research unit has maintained its own machine shop to support the design and fabrication of such instruments.

Some early members of the MPL include: Carl Eckart, Russell Raitt, Fred N. Spiess, George Shor, Philip Rudnick, Victor C. Anderson, Frederick H. Fisher, Leonard Liebermann, and Victor Vacquier.

Today, the Laboratory consists of individual research groups, headed by principal investigators. As part of its collaborative research, MPL has received project funding from various sponsors, including the Department of Defense (DoD), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and other federal agencies. The Marine Physical Laboratory also plays a critical role in education at UC San Diego through research programs and Applied Ocean Science (AOS) curriculum.

MPL Directors have included: Carl Eckart (1946-1952), Sir Charles Seymour Wright (1952-1955), Alfred B. Focke (1955-1958), Fred N. Spiess (1958-1980), Kenneth M. Watson (1981-1991), William Kuperman (1992-2020), and Eric Terrill (2021-current).

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography Marine Physical Laboratory records document the activities of the research unit; including correspondence, administrative files, research and design materials, contracts and grants, publications and reports, images, and audiovisual recordings. Of particular note are materials documenting the Deep Tow vehicle and expeditions, as well as the design, development, and operations of the Digital Multibeam Steering (DIMUS), Remote Underwater Manipulator (RUM), and the R/P FLIP.

The records were collected and maintained by multiple people involved with the unit, including: Fred N. Spiess, Carl Eckart, Victor C. Anderson, Phil Rapp, Victor Vacquier, Kenneth M. Watson, Pat Jordan, Carolyn Ebrahimi (Administrative Assistant), William A. Gaines (Assistant Director of MPL), and Stephen Miller.

DEEP TOW

Scope and Content of Series

Series 4) DEEP TOW: Documents the design of the Deep Tow vehicle, as well as its deployment through various expeditions and cruises. The Deep Tow vehicle was originally designed by Fred N. Spiess and was used to study the sea floor. The vehicle was towed by a research vessel, connected by a cable. Overtime, additional instruments were added to the vehicle. Some of the instruments included: echo sounders (both downward and upward looking), pressure gauge, sonars (right and left looking, as well as bottom penetrating), acoustic transducer, magnetometer, temperature gauge, obstacle avoidance sonar, and camera with strobe light. Over 30 years of research is represented through the Deep Tow project, expeditions, and cruises.

This series includes correspondence, notes, designs, logs, charts, and photographs. Not included is the extensive data collected through this research. For a selection of data, please refer to the Geological Data Center at Scripps Institution of Oceanography or see the Library Digital Collection website for Data from Scripps Research Expeditions collection.

Arranged in two subseries: A) Miscellaneous Files and B) Expeditions and Cruises.

A) Miscellaneous Files: Includes general materials that document multiple expeditions, as well as items not associated with a particular expedition or cruise. Arranged chronologically.

B) Expeditions and Cruises: Arranged chronologically and grouped together by expedition or cruise.

IMAGES

Scope and Content of Series

Series 7) IMAGES: Documents the work, instruments, and research of the Marine Physical Laboratory (MPL). Includes prints, negatives, slides, and transparencies. Many, but not all of the images were taken by MPL photographer Phil Rapp. Arranged in two series: A) Images by Subject and B) Indexed Images.

A) Images by Subject: A small selection of images identified by subject. Of particular note are the images documenting research projects, cruises, and work at sea (see boxes 105, 106, and 117). Arranged alphabetically.

B) Indexed Images: MPL maintained several numbered indexed image groupings, based on their format, time of creation, and use. Images include: expeditions and cruises, underwater images, research vessels and submersibles, crew and personnel, instruments and equipment, charts and line drawings used in MPL reports, blueprints, and other drawings.

The bulk of this subseries is represented in the master negatives and transparencies, which was the primary format MPL used to retain images. MPL discontinued maintaining a master photographic negative file in 1987. Some images may be represented in multiple formats.

Please see the indexes at the start of the series, which can identify an image, and its various index numbers (based on format), name the person who requested it, and list uses of images in presentations or publications. Images represented in the indexes may or may not be present in the collection.

Arranged by format and index number groupings.
