The Office of the Associate Vice Chancellor, Health Services at the University of California, San Diego was established in 1973 with V. Wayne Kennedy serving as the first associate vice chancellor. The Office is responsible for the administrative aspects of Health Sciences, including the School of Medicine and the UCSD Medical Center. When Kennedy was appointed, the Associate Vice Chancellor was responsible for managing and utilizing the financial, physical, and human resources of Health Sciences at the university; including the analysis and formulation of policy and guidelines affecting the Health Sciences. In addition, the Associate Vice Chancellor served as the principal liaison to campus and university entities on resource matters, as well as the Director of the UCSD Medical Center; reporting directly to the Vice Chancellor, Health Sciences.
The Office of the Associate Vice Chancellor, Health Sciences has evolved and reorganized several times since its inception in 1973. In 1978, the office was renamed the Associate Vice Chancellor, Health Sciences Administration. By 1996, the office was renamed to Associate Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs Administration - Health Sciences and in 1997, the name was truncated to Associate Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs. The name of the office changed back to Associate Vice Chancellor, Health Sciences Administration in 1999. By the time Gary S. Firestein was appointed in 2020, the office was named Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences.
