The Division administers several centrally managed undergraduate and graduate programs including several foreign language programs, classical studies, ethnic studies, and the Basic Writing Program. Other units involving Arts and Humanities faculty and oversight of the Dean include: Center for the Humanities, Mandeville Center, the University Art Gallery, and affiliated external entities including the La Jolla Playhouse and the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus.
In 1985, the level of administrative authority between the office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and the academic departments emerged to support the Dean of Arts and Humanities. The position was expanded from the former position of Dean of Arts and Sciences. The Dean, at this time, was also charged with function as the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Planning. Dr. Stanley Chodorow became the first Dean of Arts and Humanities from 1985-1994.
