The Friends of the UCSD Library is a non-profit educational organization whose members take an informed interest in the activities of the libraries and the University. Since 1961, the Friends have provided financial support for the enrichment of library resources, particularly through the acquisition of books in support of academic programs. The Friends sponsored exhibitions, receptions and public events, such as the Public Events Series, the Great Authors Series and the Contemporary Writers Program. Between 1975 and 1985, the Friends sponsored an annual contest for the best undergraduate book collection. The Friends have also published several facsimile keepsakes from holdings in the library's collections. In 1993, the organization changed its name to Friends of the UCSD Libraries.

The records are arranged in five series: 1) CORRESPONDENCE, 2) SUBJECT FILES, 3) BOOK COLLECTION CONTEST MATERIALS, 4) PUBLICATIONS, and 5) LECTURE PROGRAMS.
