The Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (EVCAA) acts as the chief academic officer for the campus with responsibility for all academic personnel matters, graduate and undergraduate education, research activities in the departments and organized research units, allocation of space and FTEs, academic planning, faculty recruitment and retention, and academic affirmative action. The EVC's office also houses the Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Planning and Resources.
Initially called Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the position was established in 1972. In 1996, the title changed to Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. It was changed again to the current title of Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs in 2011.
Academic Affairs consists of two divisions (Division of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs, Division of Undergraduate Education), eight schools (School of Arts and Humanities, School of Biological Sciences, Graduate School of Global Policy and Strategy, Jacobs School of Engineering, School of Physical Sciences, Rady School of Management, School of Social Sciences, Preuss School), the eight undergraduate residential colleges, several academic support units (including: University Library, Teaching + Learning Commons, and University Extension), and numerous administrative units (including: Academic Personnel Services, Enrollment Management, the Privacy Office, and Resource Administration).
Incumbents include: Paul Saltman (1972-1980), John Miles (1980-1983), Harold Ticho (1983-1990), Marjorie Caserio (1990-1995), Robert Dynes (1995-1996), Marsha Chandler (1997-2007), Paul Drake (2007-2010), Suresh Subramani (2010-2016), and Elizabeth Simmons (2017-present).
