Papers of Jean Henri Filloux (1925-2024), marine geophysicist and research oceanographer at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Filloux was known for pioneering electromagnetic measurements of the seafloor and for developing seafloor water pressure sensors to study ocean currents. He was a fellow of the American Geophysical Union and held four patents for oceanographic instruments. The collection includes research files, writings, photographs, correspondence, and biographical information.

Jean & Odette Filloux: The Ocean and the Planet

Papers of Jean Henri Filloux (1925-2024), marine geophysicist and research oceanographer at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Filloux was known for pioneering electromagnetic measurements of the seafloor and for developing seafloor water pressure sensors to study ocean currents. He was a fellow of the American Geophysical Union and held four patents for oceanographic instruments. The collection includes research files, writings, photographs, correspondence, and biographical information. A small amount of materials are in French.

Scope and Content of Series

Series 1) BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Curricula vitae, correspondence, photographs, patents, and ephemera for Jean and Odette Filloux. Jean Filloux was part of the first sailing team to cross the Atlantic in a catamaran from 1950-1951 and a designer of one of the first laminated fiberglass sailboats, the Arpege (later La Creuse). The series includes publishing agreements for his book The Crossing of the Copula and photographs of the Fillouxs with the Arpege.

Series 5) OCEANOGRAPHIC INSTRUMENTS AND EQUIPMENT: Photographs, notes, data, diagrams, correspondence and reports for oceanographic instruments and equipment used or developed by Filloux. Filloux took numerous photographs of his scientific instruments in the lab and in the field, but few are identified. The series includes instruction manuals for scientific equipment written while Filloux was employed at Gulf General Atomic in San Diego.

ODETTE FILLOUX PAPERS

Scope and Content of Series

Series 6) ODETTE FILLOUX PAPERS: Writing drafts of Odette Piovanacci Filloux (1929-2020), who married Jean Filloux in 1953. She was a writer and visual artist who taught French language and literature at The Bishop's School and the University of California, San Diego. Odette Filloux also created the cover art and illustrations for her husband's book, The Crossing of the Copula. This series includes drafts for her prose and poetry, and a typescript of a poetry compilation, In the Margin.
