Gabriel Jackson Papers, 1969 - 2011 (MSS 787)

Extent: 1.2 Linear feet (3 archives boxes)

Papers of Gabriel Jackson, hispanist, historian and professor of modern European history at UC San Diego. The collection contains correspondence, photographs, and manuscripts of Jackson's writings, particularly on the history of Spain, the Spanish Civil War, and current events in the United States and Spain.

Gabriel Jackson was born in 1921 in Mount Vernon, New York. He received his B.A. in history and literature from Harvard University in 1942, his M.A. in modern history from Stanford University in 1950, and his Ph.D. in modern and contemporary history from the University of Toulouse in 1952. Jackson served as a cartographer with the US Army during World War II, and taught history and music at schools and colleges in the United States from 1946-1965. Suspected of communist sympathies during the McCarthy era, Jackson was unable to find permanent employment until 1965, when he was hired as professor of modern European history, humanities, and Spanish history at UC San Diego. Jackson also served as chair of the UC San Diego history department from 1965-1969, and chair of the Faculty Senate from 1969-1971. After retiring as professor emeritus in 1983, Jackson moved to Barcelona where he continued writing on Spanish and American history and culture. Jackson was awarded the Herbert B. Adams Prize from the American Historical Association for his first book, The Spanish Republic and the Civil War, 1931-1939 in 1965, as well as the Antonio de Nebrija Prize of the University of Salamanca in 2003.

WRITINGS

Scope and Content of Series

Series 2) WRITINGS: Notes, drafts, manuscripts, reviews, and publishing-related correspondence for Jackson's published and unpublished writings. Materials are in English and Spanish. Arranged in the following subseries: A) Notes, B) Essays, C) Reviews, D) Books, and E) Translations.

A) Notes: Notes, outlines, and annotated clippings in English and Spanish created by Jackson while researching his writings and talks. Includes correspondence and programs related to lectures presented at conferences. Arranged alphabetically.

B) Essays: Manuscripts of Jackson's essays on Spanish and American history and current events, many of which were published in the Spanish newspaper El País. Jackson wrote many of his essays in English, which were later translated by others into Spanish. He often kept photocopies of clippings of the Spanish versions, annotated with his comments on the translations. The subseries also includes his essays on classical composers, a small amount of publishing-related correspondence, and a chronological list of his essays published in El País. In English and Spanish; arranged alphabetically by folder title.

C) Reviews: Manuscripts and notes for Jackson's reviews of published histories and biographies, including three on Franco and the Spanish Civil War. In English and Spanish.

D) Books: Manuscripts, correspondence, notes and reviews for Jackson's published works of history, biography and fiction. The subseries includes three novels (In the Folded and Quiet Yesterdays, 1978; And Wring from Sorrow's Pay, 1990; and The Late Kapellmeister Mozart, 1991); a memoir, Historian's Quest, 1969; biographies of Mozart, the Vila family of artists, and Juan Negrín; and histories of Spain, Europe, and the Spanish Civil War. Many of Jackson's books were published first in English, and later translated to Spanish; however, Juan Negrín: médico, socialista y primer ministro de la república en guerra (2008) was published first in Spanish. The subseries includes correspondence and interview notes with the Negrín family, whom Jackson interviewed for his biographies of Negrín, and with Aiete-Ariane Films, who interviewed Jackson for a documentary film on Negrín. In English and Spanish; arranged alphabetically by title.

E) Translations: One folder of Jackson's translations of Jorge Guillén's poetry from Spanish to English.
