In 1980, Installation Gallery was opened in San Diego with a goal to present local and regional artists. In 1992, inSite was formed, replacing Installation Gallery. Created as a network of contemporary art programs and commissioned projects among non-profit and public institutions, inSite explored public or contextual art practice in the specific context of the San Diego-Tijuana border region.
For more than thirteen years inSite focused on the San Diego-Tijuana corridor as a background of unexpected political and cultural development. During that time, inSite had five major versions: inSITE92, inSITE94, inSITE97, inSITE2000, and inSite_05. The projects were made up of a wide variety of manifestations, ranging from the written word to performance art. Artists who contributed to inSite include: Joyce Cutler-Shaw, Roman de Salvo, Diego Gutiérrez, Louis Hock, Allan Kaprow, Jean Lowe, Ulf Rollof, Marcos Ramírez ERRE, and Lorna Simpson.
The inSite Archive contains materials documenting the inSite organization and the projects of its artists. The collection contains 205 binder boxes, produced by inSite staff, which document project installations from the five inSite versions: inSITE92, inSITE94, inSITE97, inSITE2000, and inSite_05. The collection also includes photographs, slides, transparencies, working files, audio and video material, and a variety of digital files.
The final series consists entirely of digital records documenting the most recent project, Casa Gallina (2013-2018). This series contains circa 1,600 files organized in 342 digital objects, available on the Library's Digital Collections website.
Arranged in six series: 1) PROJECT BOXES, 2) WORKING FILES, 3) PROJECT MEDIA, 4) ADMINISTRATIVE FILES, 5) IMAGES, and 6) CASA GALLINA.
