Extent: 0.25 Linear feet (1 archives box)

Correspondence between Oliver Daniel (1911-1990) and composer Ernst Krenek (1900-1991), mostly written during Daniel's tenure with Broadcast Music, Inc. Collection includes original letters and telegrams from Daniel and photocopies of letters from Krenek.

Oliver Daniel was born in De Pere, Wisconsin in 1911. He studied at St. Norbert College and with pianists in Amsterdam, Berlin, and Boston before teaching at the Boston Conservatory and at Marot College. He joined CBS in 1942, first as musical director of its educational division, and later as a producer and director of music programs for the network.

In 1954, Daniel began work at Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) as the director of contemporary music projects. It was there that Daniel handled the promotion of a number of composers, including Ernst Krenek (1900-1991). Daniel also wrote a biography of the conductor Leopold Stokowski, entitled Leopold Stokowski: A Counterpoint of View (1982).

Oliver Daniel passed away in Scarsdale, New York, in 1991.

The Oliver Daniel Correspondence with Ernst Krenek is comprised of letters between the two men, mainly during Daniel's tenure at Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI). The letters, dating 1955-1976 detail their business relationship, as well as Krenek's composition and performance schedule. Several letters written after Daniel's time at BMI are more personal and relate to projects that Daniel was working to complete.

The collection contains original letters and telegrams from Daniel and photocopies of letters from Krenek. One original letter, dated 1957, contains a list of his compositions to be included in a promotional brochure. The collection also contains a few copies of letters from others, including Robert Burton and Gladys Krenek, as well as copies of newspaper clippings, programs, and ephemera related to Krenek's career.
