Physical Description: 6 manuscript boxes and 3 archival shoe boxes

Description: The accession consists of 2.5 cubic feet of personal papers of biologist

Fred Newton White. The accession includes several thousand 35mm slides taken or

collected by Fred White. A few document personal events, but most document his

scientific work. The slides include images of Guadalupe Island, a substantial number

of slides documenting Alpha Helix Antarctic Expedition of 1971, slides documenting

White’s 1974 trip to Africa and his study of Sociable Weaver Birds, slides of the

National Geographic Spanish Expedition of 1975 consisting largely of images of

Carmine Bee Eaters, slides documenting a 1976 study of African Hornbills and slides

documenting White’s 1984 trip to China. The accession includes 84 super 8mm films

dating from the 1970’s, largely documenting field work, including one film labeled,

Galapagos, several films documenting White’s work in Africa and several films

documenting the Alpha Helix Antarctic Expedition of 1971. One film is labeled,

“Helix Dedication Party.” Other films are labeled with names of marine animals and

birds. There is footage of Capetown. The accession also includes student papers from

the 1950’s, student drawings, notes for lectures and drafts of scientific papers, proposal

files from the 1980’s, three small boxes of microscope slides and other material

documenting of White’s education and work as a biologist. The accession includes

copies of letters from colleagues and other material gathered for an album presented to

Fred White in 1988 upon his retirement from Scripps. The original album remains with

the family. The accession includes files on several expeditions, including the National

Geographic Spanish Expedition of 1975.
