DESCRIPTION: Gilbert Rusk Van Dyke III worked at Scripps  
Institution of Oceanography from 1968 until his death in 1982. His  
candidacy for the doctoral degree was approved in 1980 and he was  
working on his dissertation at the Visibility Laboratory under the  
supervision of his doctoral committee chairman Seibert Quimby  
Duntley. The Van Dyke Papers consist largely of notes and data  
connected with his oceanographic studies and proposals, radiative  
transfer, optical instrumentation, remote sensing, and drafts and notes  
concerning his dissertation, "Natural Light Field in the Upper Layers  
of the Sea: A Study of Their Diffuse Optical Properties." The  
collection also includes papers concerning SIO and TRW.
