Snodgrass, James Marion 1908-1994
James Marion Snodgrass Papers, 1930-1994
Physical Description: 87 manuscript boxes, 1 Legal manuscript boxes, 2 shoe boxes, 4 record center
cartons, slides
Scope and Contents: The papers of James M. Snodgrass include calendars, correspondence, lectures,
scientific papers, memoranda, notes, subject files, photographs, audio visual materials, slides, three films
of Scripps campus, audio tape recordings of interviews with Snodgrass on history of satellite navigation.
The accession includes documentation of Snodgrass' work on the Integrated Global Ocean Station System
(IGOSS), his international work on radio communications, his work with the U.S. Navy, the National
Science Foundation, the National Research Council and other organizations with interest in American
oceanography. The collection includes Snodgrass's manuscript autobiography, An American Boffin, and
extensive biographical information documenting his life in science. The accession includes files and
photographs documenting oceanographic instruments modified for or designed at the Scripps Institution
of Oceanography during the period 1948-1974. This includes material describing the bottom temperature
recorder used by Sir Edward Crisp Bullard, Roger Revelle and Arthur Maxwell to take the first
measurements of heat flow from the sea floor. It also includes extensive files on the XBT, the expendable
bathythermograph, an instrument designed by James M. Snodgrass. These files also document
relationships between the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and companies such as Magnavox, General
Atomic and Hewlett-Packard who designed and manufactured scientific instruments and electronic
equipment.
Arrangement note: Two accessions were combined into this 92-04. The papers were received in original
folders, and many were marked with numerical file codes. No file code key was found in the collection.
Nevertheless, files codes were used to reconstruct original series, and files were arranged in those series
in an effort to restore the original order. The correspondence series included many subseries, some
arranged chronologically and others alphabetically by name of correspondent. These subseries were
retained intact, rather than rearranging the correspondence into one chronological series.
Related Material: Scripps Archives also holds drawings of the SIO Instrument Engineering Laboratory
dated 1945-1969 that were received from James M. Snodgrass in 1982 and accessioned as Accession 82-
72. Some of the drawings in this collection may duplicate drawings in the James M. Snodgrass Papers as
Snodgrass headed the Special Development Division 1950-1974.
History: The Instrument Engineering Laboratory was established at Scripps in 1946 "to assist in solving
the development needs of the Institution" and designed instruments and other oceanographic equipment
not commercially available. Early in 1949, the SIO Machine and Electronics Shops including the
Instrument Engineering Laboratory were placed under the supervision of Professor John Isaacs and
renamed the SIO Special Development Division.
