Description: The accession consists largely of Joseph Lee Reid’s correspondence for the years 1954-
1970. The accession also includes some subject files containing material dated 1951-1975. Before
1970 when Ruth Barney was in charge of Professor Reid’s files, correspondence was arranged in
reverse chronological order. A correspondent index on index cards was maintained to provide
further access. Occasionally a subject file was created. After 1970, when Ruth Ebey assumed
responsibility for the files, all incoming and outgoing correspondence was arranged alphabetically in
subject files. At that time, the material generated before 1970 was separated from the files and
placed in records transfer cases.
Subject folder “Intermediate Water, 1958-1960” relates to Reid’s study of the intermediate water of
the North Pacific, based on data generated on NORPAC and other expeditions. This folder consists
mainly of Reid’s outgoing correspondence.
Oceanic Observations of the Pacific was a series published by UC. It was proposed by Revelle in a
November 1951 meeting of the University Editorial committee to publish physical and chemical
oceanographic data. Volume 1 included pre-1949 data generated mainly on SIO cruises. Volume 2
covered observations made in 1949. These folders include correspondence exchanged by Reid, Paul
Horrer, Revelle, ZoBell, Fox, Robert S. Arthur, Norris W. Rakestraw and Warren Wooster. Reid
was principally concerned with the publication of the OOP NORPAC volume.
Eastern Pacific Oceanic Council folders concerning EPOS, established in November 19543, “to P
further oceanographic and biological investigations in the Eastern Pacific for the benefit of the
fisheries.” The group assisted in the planning and execution of work at sea and exchanged
information on research program results. These folders include EPOC minutes and correspondence.
In 1986 and 1988, Reid added additional subject folders to this collection, including material
documenting his work on the building advisory committee for the Eckart Building and the Physical
Oceanography and Space Science Building (later named Nierenberg Hall). Reid also added many
folders of material documenting the Ocean Topography Experiment (TOPEX) and three folders
documenting an advisory committee he served on in 1984.
