Description: The papers of geophysicist Richard Porter Phillips (1928-
1991) are composed of three main series: travel files, records
documenting Baja California gravity measurements, and records
documenting the 1978 Batiquitos Lagoon Study of San Diego County.
The travel files document personal and professional travel from 1975-
1981. The Baja files document Phillips’ gravity investigations in
Baja, California, Mexico conducted from 1964 to 1978 with support
from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers Army Map Service and in cooperation with the Universidad
Autonoma de Baja California. These files include gravity data,
altimetry, base station information, grant proposals and contracts, and
maps and graphs. The Batiquitos Lagoon Study was an investigation
of tidal aspects of the lagoon undertaken by Phillips and his associates
at San Diego State University in 1978 under a contract with the
County of San Diego. The accession also includes a small quantity of
correspondence and a file on the estate of Joshua L. Baily, Jr.
generated by Phillips as an officer of the San Diego Society of Natural
History.
