“...professional activities spanned both industry and academia, in both pure and

applied research. He made substantive contributions to such areas of geology as

paleontology, stratigraphy, sedimentology, stratal compaction, geophysics, the

geology of source rocks, hydrocarbon exploration, and the history of geology. Dr.

Hedberg was also active in the geological exploration of the ocean floors. This, in

turn, led to extensive contributions to the Law of the Sea. Perhaps his greatest

contribution, however, was in the leadership he provided in formulating and

establishing the International Code of Stratigraphic Nomenclature....”
