Description: The accession consists of the correspondence, data, laboratory  
notebooks, subject files, grant and contract records, research reports, manuscripts  
of publications, personnel records, patent files and other material documenting the  
career of physicist Theodore Folsom. The bulk of the accession documents  
Folsom's career at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and his lifelong interest  
in radioactivity in the marine environment.  
The papers are divided into a number of series: Pier Laboratory Files, Subject  
Files, Manuscripts of Folsom Publications, Redwing Files and Environmental  
Health and Safety Files Series, Patents Series, Reports and Reprints by Others,  
Argonne National Laboratory Files, GEOSECS (Geochemical Ocean Section  
Study) Files, Miscellaneous Current File, Reports and Laboratory Notebooks,  
Cruise Data Series, SIO Information Series, Historical Material and Files  
documenting Fallout in the Ocean.  
The accession includes some records documenting Operation Redwing and other  
Pacific atomic tests in the 1950's. Folsom served with other SIO scientists as a  
consultant to the federal government to monitor these tests. The accession also  
includes records of SIO, UC and UCSD safety committees for the period 1952-  
1965. Folsom served on these committees and was particularly concerned with  
radiation safety at the University of California.
