East Asia Collection
Established in 1987, the East Asia Collection focuses on collecting modern and contemporary Chinese, Japanese, and Korea (CJK) language materials in the humanities and social sciences, including literature, history, sociology, linguistics, art, film studies, philosophy, economy business, political science, and international relations pertaining to each region.
With over 200,000 volumes in print, 1,200,000 digital titles from multiple databases, 19,000 visual images, and 3,000 films, this expanding collection is rapidly becoming recognized as a new regional as well as national resource center for researchers and students in the field of East Asia area studies.
The East Asia Collection is housed on the 4th floor of Geisel Library. The Collection is kept up to date and have an ongoing book exhibit that rotates between new books and specific themes selected by the Librarians.
In 2020, UC San Diego Foundation trustee and alumna Sally T. WongAvery '75 established the Sally T. WongAvery Collection of Chinese Materials with the donation of a complete collection of Chinese News. She went on to establish the Sally T. WongAvery Fund for East Asian Collections and the Natasha Wong Endowment for East Asian Collections in 2022 in support of UC San Diego Library’s East Asian collections, research, and scholarly activities.
Notable Local Collections:
- 1973 Guardian Tour of China - Photos take by an American tourist who joined a 21-day tour of China in - August of 1973 sponsored by the Guardian Newspaper.
- CJK (East Asian) Graded Reading Collection Books designed to facilitate Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language learning based on learners' mastery of vocabulary.
- Chinese Cultural Revolution Posters Collection Propaganda posters created by various Chinese agencies, 1968-1989.
- Committee of Concerned Asian Scholars Friendship Delegations Digital Archive Photographs and documents contributed by CCAS delegates who traveled to China in 1971 and 1972.

- Norman Spencer Photographs Collection Photographs depicting Chinese independent film and art scenes, 1999-2019.
- North Korean Propaganda Posters Collection Hand-painted reproductions of printed propaganda posters, 1985-2002.
- Posters of the Chinese Independent Film Festivals Chinese Independent Film Festival posters and ephemera from the Li Xianting Film Fund Archive and REEL China Film Festival that occurred from 2004 to 2016.
- Sally T. WongAvery Collection of Chinese Materials
- Anti-Confucian Book Collection It consists of 747 titles that are largely political propagandas produced during 1960s-1970s, also known as the Cultural Revolution period in China.
- Chinese News The Chinese News, founded in 1983, distributed news and advertising to the Chinese-American population in San Diego until 1998.
- We Chinese in America Starting in 2001, We Chinese in America is a monthly Chinese language magazine published in San Diego, featuring news concerning Chinese Americans in Southern California and the San Diego area.
