OpenAthens is Now the Preferred Way to Access Resources Off Campus

We’re excited to announce that UC San Diego Library has fully implemented OpenAthens — a faster, easier and more secure way to access library-licensed resources when you’re off campus. OpenAthens is available in addition to the existing Campus VPN, giving you greater flexibility in how you connect.

What is OpenAthens?

OpenAthens is an identity management platform that provides seamless access to the Library’s licensed resources. Integrated with UC San Diego’s Single Sign-On (SSO), OpenAthens allows you to log in using your UC San Diego credentials — no extra steps or accounts are required.

What Has Changed?

  • Simplified Access: Log in with your UC San Diego credentials to your Library account, which will also begin your OpenAthens session.
  • One-Time Authentication: Sign in once per session for uninterrupted access — no more VPN timeouts or dropped connections.
  • Faster Browsing: OpenAthens typically offers faster load times than VPN.

VPN and On-Site Access

While OpenAthens is now the preferred method for accessing library resources off-campus, IP-based access for on-campus use remains unchanged. Campus VPN will continue to be supported for off-campus access where needed.

How Do I Use OpenAthens?

There are several ways to connect:

  • Start with UC Library Search
      • Go to UC Library Search and click UC San Diego Single-Sign-On (SSO). This will sign you into your library account and OpenAthens.
  • Sign In from a Publisher or Resource Page
      • On many academic databases and journals, look for a “Sign in via your institution” or “OpenAthens login” option. Then, search for and select “University of California San Diego”.
  • Use Direct “Athenized” Links

We’re confident OpenAthens will enhance your research experience, making it easier and more reliable to connect with the information you need — anytime, anywhere.
