As an academic, you want your research to reach the most amount of people possible. One way to do that is you make your work open access (OA), available to readers regardless of whether they have a subscription or access to a university library. There’s been a lot of talk in the last few years about OA in scholarly publishing, and a lot of confusion and misconceptions. Perhaps you’ve heard that you always have to pay to make your articles OA (false), or that there’s no peer-review involved (false). In addition, every publisher has their own policies about OA and your rights as an author.
Avoid the confusion and frustration by joining in a discussion with experts from the UC San Diego Library who will demystify OA publishing, share resources to help you find the right fit for your publication and answer questions that you have to expand the reach of your scholarly work!
In this workshop you will:
- Gain a better understanding of what Open Access is–and is not
- Know how to identify, evaluate, and leverage OA opportunities to disseminate your scholarly work more widely
- Learn about the University of California OA policy, and how it impacts you as a UC researcher
- Understand how the Library can help you find which journal is right for you and learn about discounts available to you for publication in prestige journals
