UC San Diego Library is pleased to announce that 24/5 student access is returning to Geisel Library, following advocacy led by Associated Students (AS) and with support from Chancellor Pradeep Khosla and university leadership.

Beginning Sunday, March 29, 2026, extended hours will resume during the academic year, offering 24-hour access to Geisel 2 East five days a week. Library spaces will be continuously available from Sunday at 10 a.m. through Friday at 5:45 p.m. for students with a valid campus ID.

“When I learned that recent budget cuts had reduced library hours, I appreciated the prompt outreach from AS President William Simpson. I am proud to support expanding Geisel Library’s hours; it not only improves the student experience, but also reflects our mission as a university that is student-centered,” said Chancellor Khosla. “This expansion was the result of several months of collaborative planning, regular progress checks, and thoughtful goal setting, and I’m grateful to the Associated Students and the Library employees for making this change possible.”

The return of extended hours stems from consistent student feedback emphasizing the importance of reliable late-night and overnight study spaces at Geisel Library in supporting academic success. Expanded access is possible through additional ongoing financial support provided by the Chancellor. This funding commitment ensures the Library can sustain extended hours while continuing to provide core resources and services that support access to information and the use of library collections in instruction and research.

“Restoring 24/5 access reflects our shared commitment to providing access to learning spaces, services and resources when students say they need them most,” said Audrey Geisel University Librarian Erik Mitchell. “We’re grateful for the advocacy and leadership of Associated Students in communicating the value of library spaces and services to the student experience and especially grateful for our dedicated Library employees who are making this possible.”

Associated Students leaders William Simpson and Kaleb Truchan, who led the effort to gather student feedback and advocate for the restoration of library hours, shared the following:

“24 hours is back! Students, we hope you use the library to its fullest. With expanded access and a strong lineup of existing events and activities, the library will continue to be a central place for studying and fostering community both during the day and at night. But it doesn’t stop there. As your student leaders, we look forward to partnering with the Library to further expand opportunities to our students in the future. Go Tritons!”
