UC GIS Week: Mapathon

When
Nov 15, 2023
1:00 PM–4:00 PM

Each year, disasters around the world affect or displace 200 million people. Many of the places where these disasters occur are literally ‘missing’ from open and accessible maps and first responders lack the information to make valuable decisions regarding relief efforts.

Join the Library for a Mapathon, or a mapping party, to support the Missing Maps project. Missing Maps asks for volunteers worldwide to map vulnerable areas before disaster or crisis strikes to reduce risk and speed recovery efforts. We’ll work together to trace buildings and roads from satellite images, for example; then, humanitarian groups on the group will add the details and create maps with our data.

No experience or special skills are required. This is a Bring Your Own Device event. Bring your own laptops and chargers. Snacks and treats will be provided.

Join us for the whole event or drop in as your schedule allows. Want to tell us that you’re coming? Registration is open and optional (link below).

This event is part of the University of California (UC) GIS Week, which is an annual opportunity for the UC community to learn and engage with experts and mapping projects across the UC system and beyond. Ask questions during the thematic mapping panels, engage with GIS industry professionals, and interact with innovative poster presentations.
