Taken from the sci-fi aesthetics of UC San Diego’s iconic Geisel Library building, the UC San Diego Library is hosting a written/spoken word event: Short Tales from the Mothership!
Writers should send fantasy or science fiction pieces of no more than 250 words to spaulson@ucsd.edu by Friday, October 13. At the event you will have the opportunity to read your entry or have it read aloud for you. All are welcome to come listen to these short stories from the beyond!
Short Tales from the Mothership is the third meeting of our micro-fiction project. We’ll identify further writing goals and look for future co-hosts that evening— but, mostly, we’ll be celebrating an elegant genre by listening to short tales from fellow futurists, time-travelers, inventors, artists, and writers. This evening is inspired by the short postcard stories that magazine editor George Hay encouraged in the 1970’s. He dared such authors as Arthur C. Clarke to send sci-fi stories that easily fit onto a postcard.
Otherworldly libations from our refreshment laboratory will be served along with live Theremin & synthesizer musical interludes.

All visitors to the UC San Diego campus are required to display a valid parking pass. The closest parking to the Geisel Library is the Hopkins parking structure. More information about parking on campus.
Driving Directions from North of UC San Diego
- Take I-5 southbound past the 5/805 split.
- Take Genesee Avenue exit westbound (right off freeway).
- Take Genesee Avenue to North Torrey Pines Road.
- Turn left on North Torrey Pines.
- Turn left on to North Point Drive.
- Follow North Point Dr. through the stop signs; as it curves right it will become Hopkins Drive.
- Continue on Hopkins Drive until you reach Voigt Drive.
- The Hopkins parking structure is at the corner of Voigt Drive with entrances on both Hopkins and Voigt Drive.
Driving Directions from South of UC San Diego
- Take I-5 northbound.
- Take La Jolla Village Drive westbound (left off freeway).
- La Jolla Village Drive turns into North Torrey Pines Road. Stay on it to North Point Drive.
- Turn right on North Point Drive.
- Follow North Point Dr. through the stop signs; as it curves right it will become Hopkins Drive.
- Continue on Hopkins Drive until you reach Voigt Drive.
- The Hopkins parking structure is at the corner of Voigt Drive with entrances on both Hopkins and Voigt Drive.
