A Geisel Library 50th Anniversary Signature Event

The Mothership is taking flight once again! This sci-fi microfiction event is inspired by sci-fi magazine editor George Hay. In the 1970s, Hay asked authors—including Arthur C. Clarke, the namesake of UC San Diego’s Clarke Center—to submit short stories that would fit on a postcard. Likewise, Short Tales from the Mothership invites participants to submit short stories inspired by UC San Diego’s iconic Geisel Library building, designed by much-admired architect William Pereira.

To participate, send a sci-fi, fantasy, or horror story with 250 words or fewer to Scott Paulson (spaulson@ucsd.edu) by April 27, 2021. At the event, you will have the opportunity to read your entry or have your work read aloud for you. In celebration of Geisel Library’s 50th anniversary, stories should include a reference to “50” or “50th.”

Curious about what to expect? Watch recordings of the 2017 and 2020 events.

All 50th anniversary signature events are complementary. Donations are welcome, and a gift of any amount grants membership to Library Associates, a group comprised of alumni, faculty, staff, parents, and dedicated community members who recognize that the Library is at the heart of UC San Diego’s academic mission. More information about the Geisel Library’s 50th anniversary celebration can be found at geisel50.ucsd.edu.
