Ravens @ The Nest Exhibit

This exhibit celebrates the pairs of ravens that nest in the eaves of our iconic Geisel Library. (Can you spot them?)

Our Library employees are devoted raven-watchers and avid raven souvenir collectors. Most of the year, these personally curated retail relics and collectible corvus remembrances sit proudly in staff cubicles, but this quarter, these items have been gathered together for a special display in the Library’s newest exhibit area, coincidently named The Nest.

Beyond the personal souvenirs, we also scoured the Library’s catalogs and pulled favorite raven books and poems for your perusal. Some very informative Government Documents were also included. The many literary, poetic, mystical, mythological and folkloric aspects to this display about ravens is endless!

Did You Know…

In 2021, the U.S. Postal Service unveiled the Raven Story Forever Stamp at the Sealaska Heritage Institute in Juneau, AK. According to the USPS website:

“Merging traditional artwork with modern design touches, this stamp depicts one of many stories about Raven, a figure of great significance to the Indigenous people of the northern Northwest Coast… The stamp design depicts a raven just as he escapes from his human family and begins to transform back into his bird form… Among the cultures of the region, the raven plays an essential role in many traditional tales, including stories about the creation of the world. The stamp is inspired by the traditional story of the raven setting the sun, moon and stars free.”
