UC San Diego’s New Writing Series is excited to announce their upcoming readings from Lily Hoang and Meliza Bañales aka Missy Fuego. The event is free and open to the public!
Lily Hoang
Lily Hoang is the author of five books of prose, including “Changing” (recipient of a PEN Open Books Award) and “A Bestiary” (winner of the Cleveland State University Poetry Center’s Non-Fiction Book Prize). With Joshua Marie Wilkinson, she edited the anthology “The Force of What’s Possible: Writers on Accessibility and the Avant-Garde.” In Summer 2017, she was Mellon Scholar in Residence at Rhodes University in South Africa. Hoang teaches in the MFA program at UC San Diego.
Meliza Bañales
Meliza Bañales was the first Chicana/Latina on the west coast to win a poetry slam championship in 2002, has toured with Sister Spit and Body Heat, and gained national recognition for her appearances on NPR and The Lesbian Podcast. Her short film with J Aguilar entitled “Getting Off” won the Jury Award at the Los Angeles Transgender Film Festival in 2011. She is a community builder with the Los Angeles Femmes of Color Collective and Con Fuerza, a radical, Xicana Feminist collective in the heart of East LA.

Driving Directions from North of UC San Diego
1. Take I-5 southbound past the 5/805 split.
2. Take Genesee Avenue exit westbound (right off freeway).
3. Take Genesee Avenue to North Torrey Pines Road.
4. Turn left on North Torrey Pines.
5. Turn left on to North Point Drive.
6. Follow North Point Dr. through the stop signs; as it curves right it will become Hopkins Drive.
7. Continue on Hopkins Drive until you reach Voigt Drive.
8. The Hopkins parking structure is at the corner of Voigt Drive with entrances on both Hopkins and Voigt Drive.
Driving Directions from South of UC San Diego
1. Take I-5 northbound.
2. Take La Jolla Village Drive westbound (left off freeway).
3. La Jolla Village Drive turns into North Torrey Pines Road. Stay on it to North Point Drive.
4. Turn right on North Point Drive.
5. Follow North Point Dr. through the stop signs; as it curves right it will become Hopkins Drive.
6. Continue on Hopkins Drive until you reach Voigt Drive.
7. The Hopkins parking structure is at the corner of Voigt Drive with entrances on both Hopkins and Voigt Drive.
