Meet the Creators of IYA: The Ex’celen Remember

Join us for a discussion with the creators and artistic facilitators of “IYA: The Ex’celen Remember,” a new play inspired by Louise J. Miranda Ramirez, tribal chairwoman of the Ohlone/Costanoan-Esselen Nation, and written and arranged by Luis xago Juárez, artistic director at Baktun12.

Ramirez and Juárez will be joined by Ross Frank, associate professor at the Department of Ethnic Studies, and PhD students Michelle Huynh and Jesse Marchese from the Department of Theatre and Dance, for a discussion about the play.

The play will premiere outdoors at UC San Diego’s North Torrey Pines Living and Learning Neighborhood on Friday, November 12, at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday, November 13, at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. All performances are free and open to the public. Registration to attend the live performances is separate and required.

Synopsis: 

When a Native family reunites by chance to remember a loved one, they rediscover who they are to themselves, to each other, and to their ancestors. IYA: The Ex’celen Remember is a story about love and the importance of keeping the sacred traditions and culture of the Esselen people alive and thriving.
